Course overview
The Research Design Methodology course provides an introduction to the methods available to conduct business and academic research. Participants become aware of the various sources of data/information available and explore them, collect and analyse primary sources of data and develop the ability to write professional reports.
The training is designed to equip learners with applied knowledge and skills in formulation of a research proposal, conducting empirical research, collecting and analysing of quality data, to ultimately produce quality research.
The course is designed to accommodate both learners in formal education and learners already employed. It aims to develop informed and skilled learners that can apply the acquired skills in any industry and should contribute towards improved productivity, efficiency in the workplace and enhance employ-ability.
Purpose of the course
The purpose of this course is to equip learners with applied knowledge and skills in formulation of a research proposal, conducting empirical research, collecting and analysing of quality data, to ultimately produce quality research.
On this basis, the objective is to:
- Distinguish between the different types of research, understanding the research process roadmap and what constitutes a primary research focus, with the aim of choosing an appropriate field of study and selecting a title.
- Formulate a research proposal that aligns with the selected title, and illustrate the structure and content thereof.
- Understand the research process, research design and methodology, and master the skills required for excellent technical presentation, academic writing, and the formulation of conclusions and recommendations.
- Grasp the importance of utilising appropriate research instruments and understand the elements of data analysis, questionnaire design, structural validation and interpretation of results.
Course objectives
When a learner exits this course he/she will be able to:
- Provide a satisfactory orientation and research foundation to the intended case study/investigation covering the research problem and objective(s) of the study.
- Conduct an acceptable appropriate literature review covering the primal areas in which research questions that have been posed, have to be answered.
- Formulate the research design which also encapsulates the methodology for data gathering (sampling technique and delimitations of the study) including the design of data capturing instruments and methods of data analysis (descriptive and non-descriptive statistical techniques to be used) to analyse the captured data.
- Carry out appropriately satisfactory data analysis with interpretation of results
- Conclude the research report in an integrative manner that covers the heading – summary, conclusions and recommendations.
